We believe regenerative energy from the sun is a universally available force for good when combined with patient capital willing to take risks on an island in the midst of a revitalization. EsLa Energía was formed as a San Juan-based Qualified Opportunity Zone Business (QOZB) focused on providing renewable energy and resiliency across Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.
In 2019, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico demonstrated its commitment to diversifying the island’s electricity generation by passing the Puerto Rico Energy Public Policy Act (Law 17). This landmark legislation is being called the “Puerto Rican Green New Deal” with a mandate for 50% renewables by 2025 and a mission to restructure the island’s current consumption patterns to more distributed generation and enhanced grid resiliency. Given that 47% of Puerto Rico’s electricity is derived from petroleum and only 2% come from renewable sources, there is a compelling opportunity to rebalance the island’s electricity mix and reduce its carbon emissions.
We see the island as a future case study for regenerative energy and continue to build towards that future reality.
